Maybe you only need a few lessons, because you've already done it a bit in junior high?
Have fun looking for a new sewing machine :D I'm really glad I don't have to hand-sew everything... My first sewing machine was a Janome 423S. It was quite portable, but if you sew a lot of very heavy fabrics (multiple layers of thick curtain fabric or leather, for example), it has trouble with it. So after 10 years I got a new one. The Janome still works fine, though, so now I have 2 machines. I take the Janome with me when I want to sew somewhere else. I just went to the sewing machine store with some example fabrics so I could try out some sewing machines! But around here, a sewing machine store focuses on one brand (for example Brother or Bernina), so you may want to visit several stores, if possible? Some stores also give sewing lessons.
