Hello!

[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith 2023-01-01 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so happy to see a new friending meme on here. I plan to boost the signal on my blog and [community profile] twitter_refugees.

The Basics
Name: [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith
Country: Turtle Island / USA

The New Year
Do you have any resolutions?: Yes, but I'm only partway through making my year-beginning posts and haven't finished that one yet. Just watch my blog, it'll pop up soon.
Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: I am really enjoying The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. Does anyone else know of more dictionaries for NEW words like this? Because that's about what it takes to find ones I don't already know.
Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: I run a Poetry Fishbowl in my blog on the first Tuesday of each month; next up will be January 3 on "short forms." [community profile] crowdfunding is doing the Rose and Bay Awards for excellence in cyberfunded creativity in January-February, and also does a Creative Jam mid-month; next up will be January 14-15 on "youth." [community profile] allbingo has a new fest each month, currently the Public Domain Day Bingo with prompt lists for Sherlock Holmes, movies, music, and literature. I've been supporting [community profile] twitter_refugees with posts about using DW, and I plan to continue that.
Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: I just got a bottle of birch syrup that I'd like to try cooking with. I figure any recipe for maple syrup should work with other tree syrups.
Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: I finished a good deal of them, but have not yet done my goals in review post. My 2022 goals are here, though, so you can see the partial notes as to which are complete.
What were your favorite memories from the past year?: We had a couple of great trips to view holiday lights this winter. I planted several oak seedlings.
Do you have any new years traditions?: We like to stay up until midnight and toast the New Year with nonalcoholic celebratory beverage. Muscadine grape juice is a personal favorite.
Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: I'm putting more effort into archiving web links to reduce linkrot.

The New Friends
What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: Freaks. People who don't fit in. Smart people in a world full of idiots. Other folks who are tired of the world being an asshole. Anyone looking for a highly active blog with a wide, deep topic range. Fans of poetry or nature.
What do you like to read about?: I like topical discussions more than purely personal rambling -- craft projects, nature observations, how to posts, question prompts for conversations, bloggers arguing with an article or book, etc. I love link clouds. I'm also a fan of blogs that post art, photography, or other images; I'd enjoy making more artistic friends.
How often do you check your friends feed?: Erratically, as I have time. I post daily, though, and try to reply to comments.
Do you have any deal-breakers?: I typically do not read or subscribe to friends-locked blogs, because the lock dingbat is too small for me to see. I am not into the fandom police, gender police, or pretty much any other picking on people and trying to force them to do/not do things based on a stranger's whim.
Do you mind reading about fandom?: I enjoy fanfic and fannish discussions. Recently I posted about The Three Laws of Fandom.
If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: Fandoms of interest include the Avengers, Gargoyles, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Lucifer, The Sandman, The Sentinel, Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, Star Wars, Supernatural, Tolkien, and the X-Men. Plus a ton of other stuff; we have pretty much wallpapered our house with books and videos.

Currently...
Reading: LIFE: Ghost Towns. We bought several single-issue magazines with our family holiday funds and this is a favorite.
Watching: Actually between things, we just finished PiƱata Masters and need to pick something new. Probably animated? We tend to alternate. Definitely on the shorter side, it's Fishbowl week.
Playing: Nothing at present.
Thinking about: [community profile] snowflake_challenge. Extraterrestrial life.
Hobby/Interest: activism, astronomy, climate change, cooking, crowdfunding, ethnic studies, gender studies, Paganism, peacework, placemaking, S-risks and X-risks, speculative fiction, syntropy, tikkun olam, verbal self-defense, wildlife, worldbuilding, xenolinguistics.
Planning for: Finishing my year-beginning posts. Tuesday's Poetry Fishbowl on "short forms." Garden catalogs starting to arrive.

>> *raises a hand* I'm a freak! More a weirdo, actually, but yeah. <<

Pleased to meet you.

>> My journal is friends only though, I hope that's okay! <<

Do what works for you.

The reason I try not to read FO journals is because that promptly leads to me annoying everyone. The lock dingbat is so small I usually don't see it, which means I try to link to things that are locked. The only way to avoid that is for me to minimize having locked posts on my reading page. People use blogs for different purposes, and for me, it's a lot about networking, finding cool things and showing them to my audience. I have nothing against people locking their journals, they're just using them differently than I use mine.

You're welcome to read my blog if you find it interesting though.
