Thanks for the Janome rec. I have seen classes at Joann Fabric. Not sure what brands of sewing machine they carry. Me being me (kinda cheap) I'll probably look on Craigslist first.

If someone sells you their sewing machine, they may also be able to give you explanations about how to use it (and then you won't immediately need sewing lessons) ?

That's brill. I know that many machines have their "little ways," where some inside knowledge on their quirks can be useful.
