The New Year Do you have any resolutions?: I want to do more things that give me energy rather than drain me of energy. Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: I'd just like more quiet time spent intentionally in the evening, which involves writing and reading. Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: Nothing huge on the horizon. I imagine there will be a trip to see family, and I'd love it if we could swing a small/long-weekend vacation but that's not set in stone. I want my house to be remodeled by the end of the year! Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: I want to find something active and possibly social. Like a hiking group or a circus fitness class. I want to stick to watercolor painting, which I've only done sporadically in the past but really enjoy. Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: (If not, that's okay. Just skip this one) Last year I wanted to make more friends which I put effort into but didn't result in anything long-term. I also wanted to make more time for myself and that happened, thanks to my kid starting preschool a couple days a week. What were your favorite memories from the past year?: Camping, a trip to see friends and family in Oregon. Do you have any new years traditions?: I like to be cozy at home. I don't even stay up until midnight on NYE. I always follow along with Apartment Therapy's January Cure to get a fresh start on decluttering my home. Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: More hikes, more time with friends.
The New Friends What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: People who post regularly about their real lives (vs fiction/fandoms) and who are thoughtful. What do you like to read about?: Real-life happenings, even if they feel boring to the person writing. Self-reflection. How often do you check your friends feed?: Once or twice a day. Do you have any deal-breakers?: The usual stuff that shouldn't need mentioning. Lurking without ever posting. Excessive unsolicited advice. Do you mind reading about fandom?: I do mind and will either scroll past those posts or unfriend if that's all that's ever posted. If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: n/a
Currently... Reading: The Maid by Nita Prose Watching: Gilmore Girls (it's what I watch on the treadmill) Playing: n/a Thinking about: Parenting (my daughter is about to turn 4), how to feel more at peace, keeping organized Hobby/Interest: Knitting, crocheting, gardening, learning about nature, photography, ukulele Planning for: A home remodel that will add a bedroom for our kid, future paid or volunteer work, more adventures after a few years of being pretty unadventurous
I was deliberating to reply to you when I saw that you're watching Gilmore girls! That's one of my favorite shows ever (but I'm not in any fandom, no worries:D). I think we'd get along. Like to be friends?
>>Like a hiking group or a circus fitness class. I want to stick to watercolor painting, which I've only done sporadically in the past but really enjoy.<<
I highly recommend that you combine the hiking and the watercolor! Buy or make a plein air kit with a limited palette and a sketchbook. For a long hike, you want a very light kit, but for a shorter one you can carry more; weight limits depend on your stamina but it's best to start small. Do some landscape or nature illustrations while you're out. Then when you get home, you can use those as guides for a larger painting if you wish. My notes under this poem talk about watercolors en plein air. This way, you have two motivations for each trip out, and you get pretty souvenirs that you can use later.
On the other hoof, that circus fitness class would be great for gesture sketching if your friends didn't mind you whipping out a sketchbook after you got tired.
>>People who post regularly about their real lives (vs fiction/fandoms) and who are thoughtful.<<
I post daily about a huge range of things, including articles from Big Think and a recurring post about Philosophical Questions.
>>Real-life happenings, even if they feel boring to the person writing. Self-reflection.<<
I can't think of a community for self-reflection but for real life consider birdfeeding, gardening, and common_nature. They all have members from far-flung places talking about life in their little corner of the world.
