The New Year Do you have any resolutions?: I think I'm from a different cultural background, I never understood what these "resolutions" are for, never had the wish to have any. Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: If "dive into" means "start to live in", then I wouldn't mind checking out the Gilmore Girls universe, but also Star Trek, and, probably, several more. But I'd need the option to back out. I'd not exchange my life for any of those. My life is mine, I built it, I want to continue working on it. Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: Well. I plan to defend my dissertation in spring, probably. I plan to have a conference panel with friends/colleagues and I plan to be good and feel good about it (this would be a new experience). I plan to go on working on myself (body and mind) and to be successful! Well, I do. You asked. ;P Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: I'll have to try out living without the weight of a dissertation hanging over my head. Does this count? What were your favorite memories from the past year?: Bad year. Lots of bad things. But since you only want to know about the good: I started swimming at least 5 days a week, doing contrast showers and feeling good about my sexuality. All of these are among my favorite memories. Also, I loved seeing that guy throwing apples at two cows over a fence and screaming "careful" each time he did it XD Do you have any new years traditions?: I usually try to relive the year towards its end, to remember and reflect on everything that happened, but there are years - like the last one - which are just too much. I managed to relive January and part of February and could not even think about going further. Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: Yeah, but that's private.
The New Friends What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: I like real people, real lives, thoughts, reflections. I like to interact. I often unfollow people who never comment on my posts, for instance, because I feel like they're strangers. I like to feel that my DW friends actually are friends. What do you like to read about?: It's not about the "about" It's more about how you write. I don't think I can or should try to explain this. We'll either click or we won't. How often do you check your friends feed?: Usually several times a day, but in times of great stress I might get lost for days on end. Do you have any deal-breakers?: I don't see any need to mention anything in particular. Also, friending on DW is not a "deal" for me ;P You can follow and unfollow and so can I. Neither has to explain themselves. Do you mind reading about fandom?: I usually skip those entries. If it's the only thing you write about, we won't click.
Currently... Reading: Terry Pratchett's Wyrd sisters (reread), Jonas Jonasson's Moerder Anders etc. (I'm reading it in German and am too lazy to check how they translated it into English). Watching: Start Trek Voyager (rewatch on commute), Weeds, Murdoch Mysteries. Playing: I don't. Thinking about: Laughter, husband, wood, Leo Tolstoy... Hobby/Interest: languages.. sorry, our evening is taking me away from this, but I want to post, so, this is it! Planning for:
I think you sound very interesting and nice and would be interested in adding you! I'm in my thirties and from the US as well, but living in Norway, so my journal is mostly about expat life here. I manage a book club and plan to get more involved with the arts again this year. I also write about dating and my social life and work. Let me know if you have any questions!
The Basics Name: Nicole Age: 37 Pronouns: She/Her Country: USA
The New Year Do you have any resolutions?: I'm still working on those. I'd like to be fitter, to read more, and to pick a career goal. To be honest I'm really struggling with figuring out what I feel like I have the mental capacity, energy, and time for, and don't want to set myself up for failure. Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: None as of yet... Well, there are books but step one is I want to get back into getting books from the library. Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: No, not that I recall, other than my daughter's first birthday (and my son's THIRD, good grief.) Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: I need to find some sort of exercise hobby, or a hobby that requires physical movement. Otherwise, in terms of interest: I'm interested in learning ASL. Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: (If not, that's okay. Just skip this one) I ... can't see that I made any new years resolutions last year... I normally put them into my online journal but can't find them if I did! So... I'm going to go with both NO and YES, because I can't fail to accomplish something I might not have done? Haha. What were your favorite memories from the past year?: My daughter's birth. Growing as a family. Do you have any new years traditions?: My only traditions are that we open the front and back doors to welcome in the new year and kick out the old, and we try to be mindful of the superstition that what we do the first day will influence the rest of the year. I try to stay awake, but I know there's been years where I've said "eff it" and gone to bed, haha. Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: I'd like to read more books for FUN.
The New Friends What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: I like people who post about their lives, what they're up to and thinking... I'm a nosy person, I guess. What do you like to read about?: See above. How often do you check your friends feed?: I try to check daily, though on weekends I tend to be off my computer. Do you have any deal-breakers?: I'm anti-racist, pro-choice, feminist, gender equal rights advocate and generally try to stand for all persons to be treated with respect and to be given the freedom to live their lives in a way that makes them happy. If you have an issue with that, then we will not get along. Do you mind reading about fandom?: It's not my thing, but if it makes you happy I don't mind! I just might not be able to follow along. If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?:
Currently... Reading: I've been slowly making my way through all the Terry Pratchett books (I mean ALL) Watching: I'm on a loop of watching documentaries headed up by Lucy Worsley, Tony Robinson, and Mary Beard, as well as the farming series with Ruth Goodman, Peter and... that other guy whos name escapes me, lol. Also enjoy: Rome, 1995 Pride and Prejudice, Psych, All Creatures Great and Small (PBS) Playing: I'd like to get back into playing the violin and learn the piano (someday). Thinking about: Finances. We have two kids in daycare and... ouch. Hobby/Interest: Knitting, Weaving, Crochet, Cross stitch. I aspire to learn to water color (someday) and get back into sketching (someday). Planning for: Ohhh, I don't know. More projects around our house & land (we live on five acres). Forever planning upgrades to those. This year we'd like to get a playground built for our kids.
The Basics Name: Meep Age: 33 (34 in February) Pronouns: she/æ Country: USA
The New Year Do you have any resolutions?: I try to set intentions, not resolutions. I'm one of those people who picks a word for the year. Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: I'm excited about the new Wayward Children book coming out later this month, and I haven't watched His Dark Materials S3 yet. Is there another season of Interview with the Vampire out this year? I don't follow releases very closely; I like to be pleasantly surprised. Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: I started a MFA Writing for Children & Young Adults in July 2020 (my pandemic panic life crisis) and I'm graduating in two weeks! I'm applying for a secret internship (cross your fingers for me!) and waiting to hear if I got into the MLIS program I applied for. Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: I want to dive deeper into the hobbies I already have materials for: quilting, resin casting, and embroidery/cross stitch. Plus, I've always been interested in photography and I decided that this is the year I really give it a go! Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: I was such a mess from 2019-2021 that I didn't make any resolutions. I didn't know where I'd be now. I got my career back on track in 2022 and that's a big improvement for me. Do you have any new years traditions?: My bestie still lives in Japan, so she video chats with me while she goes to a shrine for New Year's prayers! We used to go together so it's nice that we found a way to keep that tradition. Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: I hope I have more mental room to write for me this year. I'm proud of the work I did in my MFA but writing for school and publication isn't the same as writing for fun and fulfillment.
The New Friends What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: I like meeting other people my age and older (30s) because I feel like a dinosaur on most of the rest of the internet! What do you like to read about?: I like reading about people's daily lives. That's what I always liked about LJ/Dw; there's more honesty and openness and less posturing than on Twitter or Instagram, I think. How often do you check your friends feed?: I check every day but I don't often comment. Do you have any deal-breakers?: I'm a disabled neurodivergent genderqueer lesbian converting to Judaism, so make of that what you will. Do you mind reading about fandom?: No, but I like to know how fandom is part of your daily life more than meta or fanfic. I love hearing about the book you read and why you loved (or hated) it, or the con you went to, or the fanfic you're writing and how you finally figured out the scene that's been stalling you (or how you're about to lose it because you can't figure out that scene). If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: Any, really, since it's more about your relationship to your fandom(s) than any specific book/TV show/manga/etc.
Currently... Reading:Gideon the Ninth. People have been trying to get me to read it for years so I finally gave in and gave it a go. I'm also almost finished rereading TSUBASA: RESERvoir CHRoNiCLE. Watching: I'm saving His Dark Materials S3 for after graduation. I'm almost done my Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood rewatch. Playing: I'm not much of a gamer but I bought the Kingdom Hearts pack for Switch. Thinking about:The Hunger Games, as usual. (I have a lot to say about The Hunger Games.) Hobby/Interest: I crochet constantly but I don't often write about it. I don't think to, since I do it all of the time. Planning for: Right now, I'm getting ready for my trip to Minnesota for my graduation residency at Hamline MFAC! After that, it's time to start querying agents.
I just read your intro. You sound super nice, and it would be a pleasure to get to know you better~!! :) (I am one quarter Italian, btw. Don't know if this counts as interesting information, but it is true. My grandfather on my mum's side of the family was from Italy actually, and I hope I can visit his hometown in this lifetime for real someday. I have been trying to teach myself Italian for this reason, but not only that; I find Italian to be a really lovely language, with lots of great expressions :).)
Feel free to ask me anything Italian-related, if you need/want, then. I'm trying to learn Norwegian on my own, so I know that having a language buddy to go to can be really nice.

The New Year Do you have any resolutions?: I'm not doing resolutions, but this year I want to better control my anxiety and cultivate a more positive headspace.
Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: I'm looking forward to The Cure's new album, which is due this year (finally)!
Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: Various travels, but most of them are at the hypothetical stage still. So far I am taking a trip later this month to visit my bestie, as well as going on a cruise with my dad in late February.
Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: I'm thinking about getting a guitar. Otherwise, I need to pick Duolingo back up, but I haven't decided which language I want to focus on this year (last year was German).
What were your favorite memories from the past year?: Traveling with my bestie in Germany, Czechia, and Croatia, while seeing my three favorite bands along the way!
Do you have any new years traditions?: The group I sing with often performs Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on NYE. Also, for the fourth year in a row I'm doing Yoga with Adriene's 30-day yoga journey, which is now a January tradition for me.
Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: Feel good, be happy.
The New Friends What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: Authentic, open-minded, introspective folks who write about what's going on in their lives and/or what's on their mind. I like it when people comment semi-regularly, but I'd rather receive no comments than ones that feel forced or perfunctory; in turn, I'd like friend(s) who don't expect a comment on every post.
What do you like to read about?: Life: what people are doing day-to-day, travel planning and trip reports, work and career musings, creative projects, etc.
How often do you check your friends feed?: I usually check at least once per day, but sometimes I'm in read-only mode if I'm busy. I'm almost always up-to-date on reading.
Do you have any deal-breakers?: Probably, but if you are a decent human being with an open mind we will probably have some common ground.
Do you mind reading about fandom?: I would most likely not read fandom posts.
If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: N/A
Currently... Reading: The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton
Watching: Jeopardy!
Playing: One of the very old Space Quest titles, can't remember which one.
Thinking about: How I'd rather be reading right now than working. :) (Or "working", since I'm filling this out, haha.)
Hey there Daniela, I think we would make good mutual friends here! We're close in age and I'm an American living in Norway. I love reading so much that I manage a book club, and I also enjoy seeing films in the cinema. I write about expat life, dating, social life, etc. Let me know if you have any questions!
Hi Elena, I would like to get to know you since I think we have a bunch of stuff in common (like, I share literally all the hobbys and interests you listed) and you just sound really nice. (and if that is you in your icon, you also look like a nice person - hopefully that doesn't sound creepy)
Also, the people you are looking to meet are pretty much the same that I like to meet here as well. I turn 35 this year so I think that would be close enough in age...and while I identify as genderfluid, I feel female most of the time.
I think "dive into" in this case means "to try out". At least that was how I interpreted it. "Moerder Anders" was such a funny book, I read it last year or the year before I think.
Dorfromantik is SO fun. It's my go-to game when I'm feeling stressed out. Even when I lose a match, I'm at peace. The music and colors are so wonderful <3 I never see anyone ever mention it, so it made me ultra happy to see you do so!
I think we'd really get along, based on our beliefs/what we're looking for in others. And we're both writers :D :D :D I'd love to add you. My intro blurb is somewhere near the end *gestures*
Re: I didn't plan on taking part, but I couldn't resist ;)
Hello, I think we have a decent amount in common! I enjoy Outlander and reading in general and actually manage a book club (though in a given year I can only read 20-30 books). I'm an American living in Norway but I also spent 1.5 years in southern Germany near Mainz and Sinsheim, and I speak decent German still. We are a similar age. I write about expat life, dating, social life, my job, etc. Let me know if you have any questions!
Haha, I just read your profile. English is my only language (though I did try to learn German in high school) and you seem to have a better handle on it than I do. Of course I want to write a book too. I'm thinking about taking some college English classes to help. When I was younger, I didn't take educating myself seriously enough, and now I wish I had. I rely too much on what sounds right to me as a native speaker, and not enough on learning and following all the rules.
Hey there, I think we could make good friends here! I am also 33, from the US but living in Norway, and am planning a trip to Australia this year haha. Love reading and Harry Potter too, and I find the kink stuff you mention very interesting. I write about expat life, dating, work, social life, etc. Let me know if you have any questions!

The New Year Do you have any resolutions?: I have goals I'd like to reach this year, including more skiing/kayaking, using all of my vacation days, finding a new creative activity/group to join, and continue settling into my apartment here. Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: I manage a book club for international women so I am always looking for new reads to suggest. Personally I enjoy fantasy/science fiction, mystery/thriller, and memoirs the most. Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: Yes, my big dream trip to Australia which I hope I can make happen this year. I'm also actively dating after my long term relationship ended over the summer and would like to find a partner -- I want to put roots down and start a family in the near future after all. Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: I will try a few meetings with a local choir that my colleague invited me to, and/or want to pick up where I left off with audiobook narrating. Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: I did for the most part! I failed at writing a first draft of my horror novel, but I did manage to start it, as well as to form a writing group. Everything else was a success. What were your favorite memories from the past year?: All of my travels, visiting home in the US, making my community stronger here and having an active social life, working hard at my job. Do you have any new years traditions?: Not usually. I spent this past NYE at home sick. Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: More travel, more parties and time with friends, more film festivals, more speaking Norwegian and assimilating into the culture here.
The New Friends What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: People who update enough to give an overview of their external and internal worlds. I only update a few times per month, but they tend to be longer ones so you know about all areas of my life. I'd really like friends who want to connect as I've been on LJ and DW cumulatively since I was 15 years old. What do you like to read about?: Everyday life, personal development, interpersonal relationships, family life, pets, hobbies, cooking, etc. I'm not as interested in hearing about fandom stuff or reading fanfiction. How often do you check your friends feed?: I read it constantly, though I might not always have something to say in a comment. Do you have any deal-breakers?: Like most people here, I am left-leaning and progressive on political and social issues. Do you mind reading about fandom?: It's not something I am looking for at this time, but if we have some nerdy interests in common like Harry Potter that can be overlooked. If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: Science fiction/fantasy related books and TV shows perhaps.
Currently... Reading: Dog Park by Sofi Oksanen Watching: I am in between shows at the moment, but I might start Wednesday soon. Just finished the Harry and Meghan documentary which was well done. Playing: I'm not a gamer (although I can have fun with board games/tabletops/D&D) Thinking about: My love life Hobby/Interest: Managing the book club, figuring out where to fit in everything else this year that I'd like to do Planning for: A new gym/fitness routine
The Basics Name: Hillary Age: 37 Pronouns: She/Her Country: US
The New Year Do you have any resolutions?: I have some goals in mind. Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: I have a whole bunch of books on my kindle to dive into. I'm huge into romance novels. Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: I'd like to hopefully travel. My son will be turning 3 so I'll be planning a party for him. Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: I'd like to try to get into doing some painting or knitting. Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: (If not, that's okay. Just skip this one) I didn't have any. What were your favorite memories from the past year?: My official bat-mitzvah Do you have any new years traditions?: My husband and I like to buy cocktail shrimp on NYE and snack on that. On New Years Day we make chicken and suarkraut (as opposed to pork because I don't eat pork). Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: Travel!
The New Friends What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: Friends who update regularly who talk about their lives What do you like to read about?: Daily life, thoughts How often do you check your friends feed?: Every day Do you have any deal-breakers?: No homophobia, antisemitism, racism Do you mind reading about fandom?: To an extent as long as it's not the only thing. If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?:
Currently... Reading: Small Town Siren - Lexi Blake Watching: Nothing at the moment (taking a break from writing an IEP) but I'm watching RHOBH from the beginning (on season 2) and current season of RHOP. I'm also into Bobs Burgers and Hells Kitchen. I'm waiting for Fauda and Beauty Queen of Jerusalem to return. Playing: Need to start Pokemon Violet Thinking about: I wish I could nap but I can't because I have to go pick up my son from daycare in 45 minutes. Hobby/Interest: Reading, board games, taking walks, travel, puzzles Planning for: Getting through this month with my husband having knee surgery tomorrow and my MIL staying here.
I crochet and embroider, so I like to make things for my family. This last Christmas, I made a scarf and sweater. The bigger the project, or the more complex the pattern, the longer it takes to make. (The sweater took me two years to complete, because I'd never made one with actual sleeves before. ;w;)
