The Basics Name: vysila Age: 70 Pronouns: She/her, although it's fine to refer to me however you find easiest Country: southern USA
The New Year Do you have any resolutions?: I do a Word of the Year which helps guide me. That word for 2023 is 'Focus'. I am also about halfway through a 101 Things in 1,001 Days project so there are plenty of goals. Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: A friend gifted me with a Disney+ subscription and I am having a great time working through all the newer content, especially Star Wars and Marvel. Not into gaming. Reading preferences are mysteries, apocalyptic and dystopia, science fiction and fantasy. Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: I have three trips in the planning stage; the biggest one is my bucket list trip to Venice, Italy. Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: I'm not much into crafts, but I'd like to try my hand at drawing and painting. And learn enough Italian to get by during my Venice trip. Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: Not resolutions, but I did accomplish quite a few things on my 101 list. What were your favorite memories from the past year?: Turning 70, discovering the Wheel of Time universe, my son and daughter-in-law buying their first house! Do you have any new years traditions?: I rewatch the original Star Wars trilogy every New Year's Day. Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: Keep my focus on high priority goals and take those planned trips. And keep up the physical activity.
The New Friends What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: I like friends my own age because we have common references, but I also like to meet younger people who can offer me new perspectives and keep me lively. People who love fandom and those who don't. People from different countries and lifestyles. Open minded people with an enthusiasm for life. DW is my only online platform these days and so I love to meet and read about a wide range of people and interests. What do you like to read about?: I love to read daily life posts, family, travel (with photos please!), hobbies, random stuff and fandom stuff. How often do you check your friends feed?: At least once daily and I comment a lot. What's the point of having a friends list if not to interact? I generally post daily, or close to it. (Also, my journal has a lot of locked posts if that is an issue for you.) Do you have any deal-breakers?: Not fond of people whose default setting is anger, narrow-mindedness, condescension or self-righteousness. I'm pretty liberal in my opinions, so anyone with super strong opinions to the opposite is hard for me to deal with. I'm trying to keep sane in this crazy world so prefer not too much content on current headlines /politics – a little is okay. Do you mind reading about fandom?: I love it! I've been in fandom for close to 60 years and can't imagine anything better. If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: Bring them on! I might find a new fandom to love. My three forever fandoms are Star Wars (Han/Luke), Man from UNCLE (Napoleon/Illya) and Wheel of Time.
Currently... Reading: Am returning books to the library today, so who knows what I'll come home with! Watching: Star Wars Rebels, an animated series. Also, finishing up a rewatch of M*A*S*H. Playing: Not a gamer. Listening to a rock/pop mix (60's – 2000's) station on the radio. Used to play flute and piano, but not for a long time now. Thinking about: Right now, trying to make selections for my upcoming bathroom renovation. Hobby/Interest: I write fanfic and (used to) make fan vids, cooking, jigsaw puzzles, a bit of gardening in better weather, perpetual decluttering, reading, cuddling with my cat. Planning for: A lot of things – travel, home renovations, more social activities, improving my health and controlling my diabetes, learning Italian, enjoying a happy and fulfilled retirement.
Very thoughtful! I have checked and am still laughing over some of your descriptions, so absolutely am adding you back. You're much funnier than I, alas.
I've been in fandom for 54 years, counting from Star Trek: TOS. Maybe a little longer if I include The Man From UNCLE. I read apocalyptic and dystopian science fiction, too.
Aww, thanks! I am perfectly happy to do a mutual add and get to know you! the fandom posts will most likely be kept to a minimum, as most of my fandom posts go to various communities.
I have just checked your profile and may I say I really appreciate this bit: I study and talk about my faith but the more I learn, the less I feel that I know.
That has been my experience as well, in many areas.
Hey! We do not have any fandoms in common, but you seem like a very interesting person, and I'd love to read your blog (mine is also a blend between fandom and RL updates, except that I am a huge weeb). Feel free to look at my blog to see if you like it or now. :) Some of my posts are about personal issues, but I usually put them under the cut. I'm 30+ by the way, hope it's not a deal breaker.
I am mid 40's but I love all the things you wrote about. I totally adore people who are like you in your age, free-minded, loving fandoms, travelling, trying new things out! That's awesome.

Lately I'm loving Max Brooks. His new one, Devolution, is a corker.

What book are we talking about... did you mean to respond to someone else's comment?
Sounds like I need to Devolution to my reading list!
