haha, is it wrong that my first thought was, "Oh no! What entries have I left public?" because... I don't remember. They might be horribly out of date, though I doubt my maturity has changed much.

I'll gladly add you back - the only challenge I feel with special interests is I often feel guilty that I might not be able to contribute much to any meaningful conversation; However, I always find them interesting to read!

I think it was an entry where you talked about a sexist ad that really spoke to me... I feel that nowadays, there is still so much underlying sexism no-one talks about anymore.

That's fine, please don't worry!! :o I have a lot of autistic traits, and tend to randomly obsess over things, and these obsessions tend to emerge very suddenly and change suddenly as well. So I don't expect anyone to be able to fully and quickly "follow" me to a new special interest... I'm grateful to just be able to share my thoughts (and thus try to write in an easy-to-follow style ^^;), and of course also read the thoughts of others!

Of course! I've added you :)

I adore the Final Fantasy series so much and have a particular love for FFXIII - FFX is so good, I also really liked FFX-2 for its quirkiness. I play on a console and also don't consider myself a gamer either, especially not with the way I start, binge play then stop playing for while to the point I forget where I got up to—AC Valhalla being one those games I have to start again.

Hellbound! It left on such a cliffhanger that I'm (not so) patiently waiting for the sequel. The Glory is on my list to watch, hopefully one I get the time to soon.

I found a fascinating article about how more diversity of birdsongs leads to improved mood, so I wrote a post about it.
This is so interesting, and I believe it! Hearing birds is always such a comfort to me, but I had not considered the diversity aspect. Will read your post for sure! I have a few woodsy parks near me where I love to go because I hear lots of birds, and I need to make time to do this more often.

I have added you! And thanks for the community recommendation, I will check that out as well.

I'm happy I could help.

>>I have a few woodsy parks near me where I love to go because I hear lots of birds, and I need to make time to do this more often.<<

I hope it works for you.

When I'm upset, I go outside. It always calms me down. I can fill up a whole room with emotion, but not the whole outdoors. It just leaches away.

>> We picked up a free swingset / slide playset off of Craigslist last year. It needs a bit of repair and some paint, but is in pretty good shape. <<

Oh, that's cool.

>> We need to clear and flatten an area for it and assemble it, basically. We already have a little sandbox that sees lots of use, and there's a pile of leaves Muppet loves to climb up and throw himself down, haha! <<

:D Leaf piles are so fun.

When I was little, I was forever picking things up to look at and play with outside. Rocks, sticks, walnuts, pine cones. I still do that.

>> I love that hobby list, thank you for sharing! <<

I'm happy I could help.

>> I like the idea of "dating" a hobby. <<

I have found that lots of folks feel daunted by trying to find "the right" hobby or exercise. Well, how can you know unless you try it? So try lots of different things. Don't make a significant investment until you find one that you like. Most have classes, workshops, park programs, gym sampler days, etc. where you can explore things without needing a big commitment.

>> I think my struggle is at step one, I just need to pick something and try it.<<

You could go down a list or roll random numbers with dice. If you're socially motivated, find a friend or relative to try things together; then you can talk about what you liked or not. I've even seen apps that set people up with an exercise or hobby partner, which has potential for big cities where it can be hard to find like-minded folks.

The New Year
Do you have any resolutions?: Oh... so many >.<
Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: I'm trying to think what's coming out in 2023... maybe the Community movie? Oh! And Our Flag Means Death season two
Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: I would like to attend [community profile] vidukon_cardiff again
Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: I have been threatening to get into bookbinding for a few years now, so I'm going to try to bind at least one book
Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: Some of them, but not all
What were your favorite memories from the past year?: It was great travelling abroad for the first time in probably 10+ years
Do you have any new years traditions?: Pre-pandemic, I used to go to my friend's house and we'd knit and watch Star Trek, but we haven't started that back up yet
Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: I would like to travel some more, save more money, be more disciplined with my music practice, and keep better track of my various goals

The New Friends
What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: I'm neurodivergent, queer, trans and nerdy, so someone who was at least pro-that stuff would be pretty essential even if they didn't have a complete overlap of experiences
What do you like to read about?: When I read pro-works it's usually science fiction, fantasy or non-fiction. In fandom... I like to read about my faves kissing >.>
How often do you check your friends feed?: I go in and out of periods of using DW regularly, so when I am on regularly it would be a few times a day, but I have long periods of not checking in for a few months
Do you have any deal-breakers?: Right wing politics
Do you mind reading about fandom?: It would be rather hypocritical if I did!
If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: Star Trek, Karate Kid/Cobra Kai, Our Flag Means Death, Willow, Only Murders in the Building, Leverage (and Leverage: Redemption), Quantum Leap (1989 and 2022), A League of Their Own 2022 and whatever you're having yourself

Currently...
Reading: Tragically, I am illiterate (i.e. having concentration problems that make it hard to sit and read for long periods of time)
Watching: Willow 2022, Quantum Leap 2022, Leverage: Redemption season two
Playing: In theory, the cello. In practice, Minesweeper
Thinking about: The future
Hobby/Interest: Crafting (knitting, crochet, weaving, spinning, dyeing)
Planning for: ABRSM exams later in the year, a (possible) trip to NYC, [community profile] festivids, The Rest Of My Life In General

The New Year
Do you have any resolutions?:

To pass my PhD
To finish my driving test

Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?:

I started going to a book club in 2022, and we are reading "Diary of a Void" by Emi Yagi.
I also just found out about a musician called Ren, so possibly learning more about their music.

Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?:

I am getting married to my partner of 10+ years in March.

Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?:

I live by the sea, so I want to do more sea swimming. I had some sea swimming lessons in 2022, but for health reasons I can't swim all year round.

I am an artist and have mostly focused on photography in the past ten years, so perhaps getting back into other art forms.

Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: (If not, that's okay. Just skip this one)

Yes, one of them was to go permanent at my teaching job - and that happened.
One of them was to have a holiday, and while I didn't really have one - I did go away for a night here and there.

What were your favorite memories from the past year?:

I went on an international trip for a project, hiking next to glaciers.

Do you have any new years traditions?:

Not really, though I do like to go on a walk on New Years Day.

Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?:

Making sure to spend time in nature!

The New Friends
What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: I am open to new friends of any kind.
What do you like to read about?: I do like reading about creative pursuits and/or travel. That said, I also like reading about people who have vastly different lives to me.

How often do you check your friends feed?: It depends, but usually once a week.

Do you have any deal-breakers?: No drama! We are not teenagers. I am here for the good vibes and mutual support.

Do you mind reading about fandom?: I'm not into fandom.

If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: See above.

Currently...
Reading: My friend gave me "Daisy Jones and the Six" to read over Christmas. That was a fun, light-hearted read.
Watching: Euphoria.
Playing: Gigi, who sounds like early Muse, Jeff Buckley and Radiohead. (I.e. my favourite)
Thinking about: too much. XD
Hobby/Interest: Generally: analogue/experimental photography.
Planning for: Wedding, which is coming up fast!

Hello!

[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith 2023-01-08 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
>> Nah, they always fail in February so what's the point? <<

You're actually way ahead of the average if you're making it clear to February! 20% fail within the first week, and 80% overall.

Also, doing a small amount of something productive is better than nothing. For people who don't like long goals, I suggest one-day or one-week goals instead, and "dating" different hobbies or exercises to see what you really like. I happen to like long goals too, but I really rely on my short ones to give me a sense of accomplishment up front. Having only long ones felt like I wasn't accomplishing much.

>>Lots of tiny weekend trips throughout Austria. I've also booked a trip to Germany, to visit new boyfriend's family for the first time...<<

Oh, that sounds interesting.

>>go out more, be more active, take more pics, travel more...<<

Do you like birds at all? [community profile] birdfeeding has folks from America and Scotland at least, and it's interesting to get descriptions and pictures from far-flung places. Or there's [community profile] common_nature for a wider approach. I listed photography communities here.

>>People who want to interact, not just lurk around. I'm here to share my life, my ideas, my thoughts, tons of pics of course... so I wouldn't mind reading something similar?<<

I post daily on a wide range of topics. I check my reading page haphazardly as I have time. Occasionally I post pictures of my yard, just hit the Photo tag if you want to find those.

>>I do have tarantulas<<

Oh, what kinds? I've seen some interesting pictures of the orange bitey thing, pink knees, and a blue one; plus the usual brown ones.

>> a wee bit of healthy eating, sharing recipes maybe, not sure.<<

I have a Recipe tag. My latest find was a banana bread brownies recipe. My partner and I enjoy looking at cookbooks together, especially on long trips -- I read them and we talk about them, then decide which recipes to try. If you start with a healthy cookbook, you'll get new healthy recipes to test out.

>> If weight loss is a side effect that's great, but overall I want to get into a healthier routine. <<

That is a sensible approach. Small, incremental changes are much more sustainable than radical ones, although a few folks have had great success with things like starting a homestead farm. For most of us, smaller is better.

>>Stress is just no excuse to dive into bad habbits.<<

What usually happens with that is 1) people don't have a good set of coping skills, so 2) when they get stressed, they run out of energy to do the hard things like going to the gym. If your exercise routine is a relaxing walk in the woods, that is much more appealing and thus easier to maintain under stress. "Make it easy to do the right thing, and hard to do the wrong thing." Just traveling in Europe is an advantage because most of its cities are built for walking, whereas most American ones are built for driving.

So if you find this is an issue for you, consider checking your coping skills. If you don't have a bunch that work when you're exhausted and cranky, then get a big list of coping skills and test some until you find more that you like. Another approach sorts coping skills into different categories. Sometimes people struggle because they have lots of skills, but only in one or two types, so for other kinds of challenge they have little or nothing.

I also like PACE planning. Have multiple plans so if one falls through, you already know what else to try. The more time you can fill with actions, the less you have to freak out over anything.

It sounds like we have some common interests. Feel free to drop by my blog to see if you like it.

The New Year
Do you have any resolutions?: Nah, I don't do resolutions.
Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: Well, I want to re-watch Black Butler, but that's not new. As for actual new stuff, I kind of want to dip my toes into Pathfinder (yes, this is because Wizards of the Coast is being...eugh).
Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: No, but only because I don't need any more! I have too many already!
What were your favorite memories from the past year?: Oof, uh...jeez. I don't know. I had some good times with my IRL friends!
Do you have any new years traditions?: I roll a d20 and whatever number comes up is how my year will go. I rolled a 14 this year, so slightly above average!
Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: I want to paint more minis this year for sure.

The New Friends
What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: People who are active! I love the people in my circle, but it's woefully dead...
What do you like to read about?: Almost anything. I'll read about your dog if you post about your dog.
How often do you check your friends feed?: Almost every day.
Do you have any deal-breakers?: The usual. Don't be [x]phobic, don't be an asshole, etc.
Do you mind reading about fandom?: Nope! I mainly want to read about fandom, honestly!
If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: Oh, I'll read about all sorts of fandoms. Leverage, Agents of SHIELD (+ Marvel in general), Black Butler, Fullmetal Alchemist...even fandoms I've never heard of, I'll read about them if it's interesting enough.

Currently...
Reading: D.B. Cooper's Parachute, a fictionalized novel about D.B. Cooper.
Watching: Leverage: Redemption.
Playing: Minecraft! (+ Slime Rancher 2)
Thinking about: Writing (instead of actually writing).
Hobby/Interest: Writing. As always.
Planning for: Classes starting again...jinkies!

The New Year
Do you have any resolutions?: No. If I wanted to change I would do it then, not wait for the new year.
Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: I've kicked off the year with Satisfactory (game). I have a handful of shows and gigs booked up, but all local theatre (Sweeney Todd, Buffy Revamped) or cover bands (Guns 'n' Roses). Can't afford anything bigger than that.
Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: Just the shows and gigs so far.
Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: I would like to do some amdram, but say that every year. I'm thinking of learning to play the guitar again, I had a few lessons a few years ago.
Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: (If not, that's okay. Just skip this one) As above, I don't tend to make them.
What were your favorite memories from the past year?: It will be something with my kids.
Do you have any new years traditions?: No.
Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: Something more musical, so perhaps the aforementioned guitar lessons.

The New Friends
What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: I tend to write my journal as a diary, so similar diary-like people. I don't require a ton of comments, but it's good to have some interaction once in a while and I love the whole social diary vibe.
What do you like to read about?: As above I like diary-like entries, but I'm not that fussy. You never know what can be interesting.
How often do you check your friends feed?: Normally daily.
Do you have any deal-breakers?: As above, I don't require constant comments, but if someone doesn't comment at all then ultimately I will probably unfriend. Otherwise what's the point in friending?
Do you mind reading about fandom?: No, as long as it isn't the only topic, or fanfic.
If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: Films, TV, music, and games are my thing, but I'm not fussy.

Currently...
Reading: Roald Dahl's Matilda to my youngest, and I did just buy Susie Dent's An Emotional Dictionary.
Watching: Nothing. Just finished the last couple of seasons of Inside No. 9 and Aftersun (2022). Keeping an eye out for what's coming up at the cinema.
Playing: Satisfactory.
Thinking about: Life 🙂
Hobby/Interest: The aforementioned films, music, TV, and games.
Planning for: Contentment.
