The Basics
Name: Elisa
Age: 39 in a few days
Pronouns: she/her
Country: Italy

The New Year
Do you have any resolutions?: I don't have resolutions per se, just some goals I'd say. Namely to keep on trying not to put myself last and look after myself properly and possibly start travelling again (haven't gone back to my pre-pandemic ways quite yet).
Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: Mmm, not sure it qualifies but for the first time in my life I'm part of a bookclub so I actually will have one book a month to read for that (it's an American literature bookclub, January's book is Angie Cruz's How Not Drown In A Glass of Water). Also, I'm taking part in a challenge set by an Italian book influencer on IG, called #mattoniinglesi (literally English bricks but that's just an Italian colloquial word for heavy tomes) which means I'll get to re-read or read for the first time some English classics this year. Right now I'm doing the umpteenth re-read of *Pride and Prejudice* but that's no effort at all, I know it by heart.
Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: I have one solo trip planned in the not so distant future but I don't want to jinx it so I won't say more. I planned a dinner out with my girlfriends to celebrate my 39th birthday next week, does that count?
Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?:
Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: (If not, that's okay. Just skip this one) I had to read back in my journal and I did make three quite specific resolutions last year and I must say I failed abysmally at keeping them. Heh. This is why I should never bother with them in the first place.
What were your favorite memories from the past year?: This will go into a locked entry in my customary 'year-in-review' post I'll make at some point this week.
Do you have any new years traditions?: Not really.
Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: Travelling. I miss seeing new places.

The New Friends
What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: People who share bits of their life, their passions, opinions. I'm mostly looking for real connections. I've been journalling, first on LJ, then on DW, for close on twenty years and the people I met on here changed my life for the better, broadening my horizons and helping me see the world in a different way. I don't mind fandom stuff! It falls straight into the 'passion' category I mentioned before, as far as I'm concerned.
What do you like to read about?: Real life, book reviews, tv shows/films, I love picture posts (Day in the Life posts especially, love seeing how people live), fandom squee.
How often do you check your friends feed?: Usually daily, if I'm super busy at least a couple times a week. I usually try to comment whenever I read (if I've got something to contribute, of course). I don't mind lurkers. But if you never ever comment, then we're probably not a good fit.
Do you have any deal-breakers?: Typing out the usual -isms feels a bit rote...on a smaller scale, if you post several times a day I probably won't be able to keep up with you. Also, long walls of text are annoying, so people who don't use cut-tags irritate me quite a bit. Btw, I lead a small, ordinary life as an English teacher in Italian secondary school and a married mother of two, so if reading about any of this sounds boring to you, we probably won't hit it off.
Do you mind reading about fandom?: not at all! I'm not into a specific fandom per se at the moment, and I've never been a fanfiction writer, but I do read some fanfiction and listen to lots of podfic (I re-listen to my faves to help me wind down and fall asleep every night). While I don't talk fandom in my journal a lot, I like discovering new things to watch/read and there's nothing more heartwarming than second-hand enthusiasm/squee, basically. My main ongoing fandom is the Rivers of London book series by Ben Aaronovitch and the lovely historical queer romance books by KJ Charles. My past fandoms I still read fic for are: ASoIAF/GoT, Dead Like Me, ER, Firefly, Generation Kill, Harry Potter, Outlander, HBO's Rome, Veronica Mars, Wonderfalls, historical/costume dramas (my fave are the 1995 Pride&Prejudice and North & South) and crime/police procedurals (especially if they have a strong sense of place - think Ian Rankin's Rebus series or Shetland, or Bron/Broen or The Killing if you like Scandi noir).
If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: See above. Mostly I'd be thrilled to have someone to talk Rivers of London/KJ Charles about.

Currently...
Reading: I'm one of those people who have several books on the go and a read a bit of each depending on what I'm in the mood for. Other than the previously mentioned re-read of P&P and the Angie Cruz book for my American Lit bookclub, I'm also reading bell hooks Feminism IS For Everyone, an excellent Aussie thriller (The Exiles by Jane Harper) and listening to two audiobooks: Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver (a modern-day retelling of Dickens's David Copperfield) and having Joe Jameson read Tom Hardy's Far From The Madding Crowd to me as I fall asleep at night.
Watching: nothing. I just finished the second season of an adorable Swedish teenage drama called Young Royals, though. I normally don't watch much tv, I just don't have time, but right now I'm on my Christmas break (I'm a teacher).
Playing: Not a gamer.
Thinking about: trying to decide what English-speaking newspaper I want to subscribe to, since it's a public entry you can read it and get a bit of a feel of what I am like. I do sporadically post publically, though most of my entries are locked.
Hobby/Interest: reading, going to the theatre, doing pilates, languages (I'm a translator by training - I'm trying to learn Norwegian on my own), podcasts, travelling, photography (sadly neglected), sewing (even more neglected).
Planning for: does lesson-planning for my classes count?;)

Hi! I think we'd be a good fit. You're welcome to check out my journal to see if you agree, but I'm adding you in the meantime :)

Is there a reason why it's called "English" bricks specifically?

Because we're going to read classics of English literature this year. Last year it was French 'bricks', the year before Russian ones.

I love the term "English bricks"! Might start using it ;)

Hello! I just eyezoomed so hard on your fandom list: Rivers of London is also one of my main current fandoms, and we overlap in a few past fandoms (ASOIAF and GenKill). I've only read a few of KJ Charles's books but several more are on my to-read list. I've subscribed to your journal - hope that's okay! :)

Oh man, having someone to talk Rivers of London with (and KJ Charles too, she's steadily climbed on top of my favourite authors in the past couple of years) would be awesome. I'll subscribe and grant access too, since I post mostly locked, okay?

I've just done a big re-listen of my fave Gen Kill fics via podfic and also started a re-read of my all-time fave in that fandom. The quality of fic in GK fandom was just out of this world.

Sounds good to me. I'll grant access as well in that case. I tend to do so automatically (because my reasons for locking or not-locking are pretty arbitrary) but I worried it might seem presumptuous or something - that's social anxiety for you, I guess!

The quality of fic in GK fandom was just out of this world.

Wasn't it? Just thinking about this makes me want to reread some of my own old faves. It was such a good fandom for just settling down and sinking your teeth into a fic!

We seem to like a lot of the same media, so I feel like I'd enjoy reading about your life and the books/shows/films you're discovering. Have added you!

Hey there!

I totally love DITL posts and I've been blogging forever as well, it's been really nice meeting so many people from so many places and becoming friends with most of them! I totally get what you mean :)

I think we'd get on really well :)

Can I add you? I post about books and RL stuff, though when I post pictures, I link to my other blog (where it's easier to add pictures).

Of course! I'm always up for new friends and if we don't hit it off we can always unfollow each other later on. No pressure. Going to add you now.

You sound interesting and would love to add you if you don't mind!

Italia was my first country outside my place of birth - that I remember and cherish fondly! (Moved to Rome when I was 12yo - dad's work took us there.) So, am always curious to live vicariously through folks who live there, are from there even today! :P *ahem* So that's part of the reason for adding but looking at your public posts, I think we'd get along.

I don't mind at all, I've just added you.

I feel Italy is a wonderful place for vacationing, living in not so much. :D So, really living vicariously through people who are there sounds like the smart choice to me. ;)
