"Writing has been on the backburner for a while, but I'd eventually like to read the "Writing Fiction for Dummies" that we own and apply what I learn from that!"
I also want to get back into writing this year :) I recently read Stephen King's "On writing" (even though I only liked this book 11/22/63 and I don't really read horror stories) and it has quite a few writing tips as well!
Haha, I am all about the dahl. I've been feeding the kids lentils, and also rice with beans. I love that both are vegan, and don't have any ingredients that anyone is allergic to. Allergies, dietary preferences, and picky kids are my biggest challenge with this job. I'll have to check out those links in a moment.
2023 better approach cautiously.
I've been growing Scarlet Runners and Kentucky Wonder beans for years. I always keep a collection of beans for seeds the next year. I've been thinking about branching out though. The one downside to these big beans is that the window for eating them green is very short, especially in my climate, they tend to get rough pretty early in the season.
Birds are one of my favorite photography subjects. Here's a link to my bird tag on my photo project: https://365project.org/tags/stephomy_birds I will probably start spamming your bird community with those pictures pretty soon. I've already joined. I think I'm going to go there next and explore. So cool that you started a fresh one. Hopefully it'll be active. I'll try to do my part.
Luckily I don't have Blue Jays here, but I do get the Steller's and the California Scrub Jay. They can be jerks sometimes. It was only two years ago that I saw an American Blue Jay for the first time during a trip to Texas... I'd better save this for the community. I can really get going with bird talk :b

The New Year Do you have any resolutions?: Read 100 books, recover from COVID, get 1000 subscribers on Youtube, reach Master Level 30 in Tetris Effect, make more harp recordings, make more cosplays and plan more cosplay photoshoots, write more stories, improve my drawings, ... Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: Not specifically. Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: Maybe travel? If possible. Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: Maybe cross-strung harp... Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: I read 93 books instead of the planned 100, but I still have 10 books in progress, so I started more than 100 books! Didn't take the JLPT N1 yet, but maybe I can do that this year. I did achieve my drawings resolutions, but I did catch COVID unfortunately :( What were your favorite memories from the past year?: I found out how to record a harp so it sounds the same on the recordings as in real life :) Do you have any new years traditions?: Eating oliebollen and watching fireworks. Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: See my resolutions :P
The New Friends What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: People who comment every once in a while at least. What do you like to read about?: Real life stuff, books, games, music. How often do you check your friends feed?: A few times per week. Do you have any deal-breakers?: Not really, I think... Do you mind reading about fandom?: I don't mind reading about fandom. If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: No real preferences. Maybe I'll discover something new and interesting if I don't know it yet :)
Currently... Reading: Voyager (Outlander #3) and Go Tell the Bees that I am Gone (Outlander #9) by Diana Gabaldon, a bunch of English manga I found in a Little Free Library, 境界の彼方 by 鳥居なごむ, 生きてさえいれば by 小坂流加, 女子高生声優・橋本ゆすらの攻略法 by 浅月そら, Geef me de ruimte! (Thea Beckman) Watching: Nisekoi anime Playing: Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Tetris Effect, Tetris Ultimate Thinking about: going to the supermarket Hobby/Interest: reading, writing, drawing, sewing, singing, playing harp/koto/flute, gaming (Tetris), travelling, languages Planning for: achieving my resolutions
All my book review posts are public, other things are locked. All posts are in English, except for book reviews on Dutch books (I write those in Dutch).
>> I'm planning on reading more disability literature this year. <<
Lois McMaster Bujold is brilliant. There are also tidbits scattered throughout older stories, back before anyone thought it was particularly a big deal.
>>Currently planning the Lunar New Year celebration at my university. In the beginning stages of planning the university's Cherry Blossom festival.<<
That sounds cool. Not a lot of places in America have enough cherry trees for a festival.
>> I thought I would graduate in 2023, but I think I may have to postpone to 2024, which I'm very disappointed in.<<
Bummer. Personal mishaps have always occurred, but now the trend is that a "4-year" degree more often takes 5-6 due to colleges larding on unneeded classes and not making sure the requirements stack concisely.
>>Not exactly new, but I'm looking forward to getting back in baking again this year.<<
I enjoy baking.
>> I bought a KitchenAid mixer at long last!<<
Go you! They do have some nice attachments. I think the shredder is the one we use the most, for making squash bread.
>> I do celebrate Lunar New Year as a Chinese American person.<<
Just different traditions -- dragon dances, red envelopes, lucky rice, etc.
>>A friend invited me to rock climb (in a gym) two months ago, and I would like to continue rock climbing this year.<<
>> Haha, I am all about the dahl. I've been feeding the kids lentils, and also rice with beans. I love that both are vegan, and don't have any ingredients that anyone is allergic to.<<
Yay! A lot of Indian cookbooks have a good dahl section.
>> Allergies, dietary preferences, and picky kids are my biggest challenge with this job.<<
Allergies are challenging when you have more than a few people together. Preferences and pickiness are challenging at first, but often possible to work through if you can offer interesting foods that pique curiosity. Think like purple dragonfruit or romanesco broccoli with its cute spirals.
>> I'll have to check out those links in a moment.<<
I'm happy I could help.
There are also places that list allergen-free recipes, but I haven't found any mass quantity recipes there. It'd be a good gap to fill.
Another fun quote: "2023 should approach people like a bomb that might go off: gently, quietly, and with great respect."
>>I've been growing Scarlet Runners and Kentucky Wonder beans for years. I always keep a collection of beans for seeds the next year.<<
Yay!
>> I've been thinking about branching out though. The one downside to these big beans is that the window for eating them green is very short, especially in my climate, they tend to get rough pretty early in the season.<<
Well, there's your motivation to try a landrace. You could select for beans that stay tender as long as possible in your climate. That sounds like a very popular feature, and especially valuable with climate change heating up. After all, slow-bolting lettuce and cilantro are popular. Alternatively, you might try tepary beans, which thrive in hot dry conditions. They seem to offer a mix of green and dry bean cultivars.
Those are awesome pictures. I do plenty of nature photography, but it's uncommon for me to get good pictures of birds.
>>I will probably start spamming your bird community with those pictures pretty soon.<<
Yes, please! I would love that. Nature pictures are popular.
>> I've already joined. I think I'm going to go there next and explore. So cool that you started a fresh one. Hopefully it'll be active. I'll try to do my part.<<
Well, I post about birdfeeding almost every day, if I can remember to echo those posts. Your pictures would help immensely. :D
>>Luckily I don't have Blue Jays here, but I do get the Steller's and the California Scrub Jay. They can be jerks sometimes.<<
I've seen the Stellar's jay while traveling out west, but I don't think I've seen scrub jays.
>> It was only two years ago that I saw an American Blue Jay for the first time during a trip to Texas... I'd better save this for the community. I can really get going with bird talk :b <<
Hee!
I didn't plan on taking part, but I couldn't resist ;)

The New Year Do you have any resolutions?: I don't make resolutions, but I set myself some goals. Might sound the same, but to me there is a lot less pressure involved there - a goal can be partially reached and it still counts for something. If that makes any sense. Anyway, mine are: - read 75 books - on a related note, read more books by/about PoC - be more patient/gentle with myself and others - be more conscious of the way I use social media - continue saving up for my dream of travelling to Newfoundland - make it through the year as well as possible
Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: Nothing in particular, I will see if there are any books/music/shows/movies come around that appeal to me. One book that comes to mind that I want to finally get around to reading is "Go Tell The Bees That I Am Home", the 9th book in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. This will be its own project I think, as it's over 1,100 pages in the German version o_O
I am also looking forward to the 2nd season of "Son of a Critch" and new episodes of "This Hour Has 22 Minutes". Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: Going on vacation to Ireland in summer, which will also be my first time on a plane (I know!) and seeing a stand-up comedian called Till Reiners on October 8th are two things that come to mind. Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: Not that I can think of - I just want to stay with my current hobbies (esp. adult colouring books and jigsaw puzzles). I might go back into making collages and I want to go swimming more often. Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: (If not, that's okay. Just skip this one) Mine were pretty much the same as this year and I did for the most part. I even read 90 books instead of the 50 I had planned, which is why I am making my goal 75 this year ;) What were your favorite memories from the past year?: Definitely meeting the singer Alan Doyle in person on November 2nd! He was so nice and kind, took a picture with me and even gave me a kiss on the cheek ♥ Do you have any new years traditions?: Not really. I usually just chill with my cat and watch TV. Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: Swimming, as I mentioned above.
The New Friends What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: Kind, empathic, understanding friends with a sense of humour. You should be able to understand that, although I've come a long way over the past few years, I do deal with a couple of mental illnesses and thus I can feel down on myself and not every entry will be sunshine and puppies. I might also get overwhelmed by life sometimes and not comment/read as much but I try my best. What do you like to read about?: People's daily lives, thoughts etc.; I just love getting a glimpse into others' goings-on and what their world is like. I also enjoy seeing pictures :) How often do you check your friends feed?: I try to do so at least once a week, and I always reply to comments on my entries so my friends see I am not ignoring them. Do you have any deal-breakers?: Well, the usual bigotry - but I don't think anyone would see themselves as bigoted, right? So I'll just say I am very left wing and while I don't want an echo-chamber, I also don't want drama or huge discussion on my journal, so it would be good if we had similar political and social views. There is a bit about that on my user-info if you'd like to check if we fit in that aspect.
Also, be accepting of mental illness, please. It is okay if you don't understand something and ask questions but discrimination or willful ignorance is not needed. This includes using words like "r*t*ard*d" to describe people. Do you mind reading about fandom?: Not at all, unless that's all of your journal's content. Even if I don't share a fandom, I enjoy seeing people be excited about something and I might even find something I would like to check out myself. If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: Nothing specific.
Currently... Reading: "The Adventures Of Isabel - An Epitome Apartments Mystery" by Candas Jane Dorsey (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52557004-the-adventures-of-isabel). Watching: Nothing in particular. I just finished "Wednesday" (which I found brilliant) and am excited for "Son Of A Critch" as said above. I am not a huge TV watcher, tbh, although I've starting watching more over the past year. I can't really keep as many shows going at once as many people seem to. Playing: The only thing I play is a silly little phone game called "Farm Heroes" :) Thinking about: How I am excited to see if I can find some new people on here :) Hobby/Interest: My usual ones (reading, jigsaw puzzles, colouring, learning languages...). Planning for: Nothing much.
I think we would get along well, I am a big reader too and I like to make real connections on here for sure. You sound like a nice person in general, so if you'd like to give it a try I would love to add you. My comment is here: https://friending-memes.dreamwidth.org/3049.html?thread=337897#cmt337897
Hello! From looking at your profile, it seems like we have a few things in common. Plus, I'd be happy to meet more Aussies given that I will very likely be heading that way sometime in the coming months! (I'm from Canada.) Feel free to look at my profile and add me if you'd like; I'd be happy to add you back!
Hello there :) You sound like an interesting person that I would like to get to know better. Especially two things in your introduction stuck out to me and made me want to be friends: I like seeing people be enthusiastic about things they like! I love that too! People enjoying stuff warms my heart ♥ and this one how horribly purity culture and toxic positivity is for mental illness sufferers in particular. YESSS, you are so right!
Hey there :) I like the way you write and think I'd enjoy your entries. I am definitely a person who writes about day to day life and thoughts myself. I am also trying (and I admit, sometimes failing) to concentrate more on the positives, because you are right, dwelling on the negatives doesn't help. I also love looking at pictures, and posting them myself. Want to give it a try?
I hope you get to go to Germany! Whereabouts does your BF live (you don't have to say if you don't want to! I am just curious because I'm German myself :))?
She lives in Essen. We've visited a couple of times and traveled to Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Köln, and several other cites. We were going to spend 3 weeks with her and her family, but our flight got cancelled then things went wonky so we will try again in the spring I hope.

The New Year Do you have any resolutions?: *ahem* I have 73 of them as of now. :D (But hey, the bigger the chance I will reach at least some of them!) Are there any new books, music, games, shows, etc. that you want to dive into?: I just finished my first book for this year (Which is a kid's book set around seals, the North Sea, etc.), and started the second (Austin Kleon's "Show Your Work!". I really enjoyed "Steal Like An Artist", so this was a logical follow-up, I guess :D.). I want to read more in general. There are multiple genres I like, alongside non-fiction / self-help books and children's crime stories :), of course. I really like fantasy and would love to dive into sci-fi, too. Historical stories are cool, too, as are those set in countries I love (Japan, Finland, Italy, ...) and those circling around music one way or another :). Music-wise, I am really open towards a lot, but I want to dive more into goth and punk again, because it makes me feel nostalgic. Games'd be "Harvey's New Eyes" maybe? Hm. Are there any small or big events that you're planning for this year?: Getting back into university / university of applied sciences. Maybe even, if I can do this, a music college. At least, I want to really have a decent education. I love learning. Any new interests/hobbies that you'd like to try out?: Sewing, embroidery, crocheting, knitting, weaving, darning/mending, ... Did you accomplish your resolutions from last year?: I wish I remembered which resolutions I had? Maybe training my memory? What were your favorite memories from the past year?: Maybe going to DBT skills group. I got along well with the fellow patients, and it really helped a lot. I just feel bad because I struggle keeping contact with people in times of severe depression. Do you have any new years traditions?: Doing tarot readings (Though I did mine a few days before NYE.). Is there anything you'd like to do more of in 2023?: Travelling, making music, songwriting, singing, creative writing.
The New Friends What kind of friend(s) are you searching for?: People who are kind, open-minded, authentic, and creative. :) What do you like to read about?: I really enjoy reading about other people's creative endeavors and ideas and ideals and whatever lights their flame. It makes me happy to be in the presence of people who follow their calling. How often do you check your friends feed?: Weekly. Do you have any deal-breakers?: Animal abuse, racism, fascism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. Do you mind reading about fandom?: Not really. :) If it makes you happy, that is fine. However, please know showing your colours either way is much appreciated and welcome. If so, what fandoms would you like to read about?: None in particular. With some, I have heard of them, but never watched them for real... Maybe "Bob's Burgers" and "BBC Ghosts" and "Futurama", because I really enjoy these series?
Currently... Reading: Austin Kleon - "Show Your Work!" Watching: The last movie I saw was Walt Disney's "Tarzan" yesterday. Playing: I played a game against my cat and my sister yesterday, in which we guessed the next cards. I got five points, my sister, too... My cat won, though. :D Thinking about: How it was possible my cat won against me. This calls for revenge! Hobby/Interest: Singing, playing the electric guitar and the keyboard, listening to music, watching movies (the sappier or wackier, the better), travelling, learning languages, creative writing, animals (esp. pinnipeds), drawing, painting, reading, dancing, martial arts, ... Planning for: DOOM and GLOOM.
My reply is on the second page, in case you are interested, but I wanted to ask you whether you'd like to be friends on here? If not, that is totally fine, of course. :) No hard feelings then.
My name is Rina. I am 38 years old, living in Germany, I LOVE the Japanese language and I admire your skill for wanting to try at the JLPT N1. Also, kudos to you for playing the koto (I used to be part of an orchestra in which somebody played the koto sometimes, it sounds so lovely!!). To me, it sometimes was a bit confusing, so I chose to play the hichiriki. Did you study music or Japanese by any chance? Either way, have a lovely rest of the day. Hope you had a good start into the new year, and that this one will bring you all the things you desire~!!
Thank you for sharing those! I actually made sweetrolls for my family and I waaaaay back in 2015 (I think) and they came looking okay. If I can find the picture, I'll share :D
