People who want to discuss serious things and at the same time laugh about small everyday things; open-minded people, who give me food for thought and an insight into countries and cultures other than mine. I would prefer women, with an age not too far from mine.

Something easy to use, and probably a portable. I'll need lessons, too. I haven't sewn (other than hand sewing) since junior high!

I'm really glad I don't have to hand-sew everything... My first sewing machine was a Janome 423S. It was quite portable, but if you sew a lot of very heavy fabrics (multiple layers of thick curtain fabric or leather, for example), it has trouble with it. So after 10 years I got a new one. The Janome still works fine, though, so now I have 2 machines. I take the Janome with me when I want to sew somewhere else.
I just went to the sewing machine store with some example fabrics so I could try out some sewing machines! But around here, a sewing machine store focuses on one brand (for example Brother or Bernina), so you may want to visit several stores, if possible? Some stores also give sewing lessons.

Thanks for the Janome rec. I have seen classes at Joann Fabric. Not sure what brands of sewing machine they carry. Me being me (kinda cheap) I'll probably look on Craigslist first.

If someone sells you their sewing machine, they may also be able to give you explanations about how to use it (and then you won't immediately need sewing lessons) ?

Awww, I am currently listening to the recording :)! How lovely it sounds! ^^ I studied at the University of Cologne (musicology + Japanese studies), and even though I didn't finish my degree, I still think back at it a lot. Part of the orchestras offered there was a Gagaku ensemble, I tried to learn more about Gagaku, got to try out some instruments, and I liked the hichiriki best :), so I stuck to it for the rest of my studies. ^^

I didn't read those before, but I will definitely put them on my to-be-read list, thanks so much for the recommendations! :) TBH this was the first time I have seen it. I really liked the soundtrack beforehand, of course, and ironically saw a brief making-of concerning the movie when I was a teenie, but of course, you can only put the pieces of the puzzle together as far as it goes. So I learned some new sides to the story. ^^ And I liked it, too.
